How to Choose the Right Wall Art Size: 18x24 vs 24x36 vs 28x40 for Armenian Metal Prints
Share
Most wall art is bought one size too small. The buyer sees the image on a screen, picks the middle option or the cheapest, and the piece arrives to sit in the center of a wall it does not hold. The decision to resolve here is narrow: for one wall, is the correct choice 18x24, 24x36, or 28x40? The image does not answer that question. The wall does.
The three sizes are not three versions of the same thing. 18x24 is an accent that belongs near other objects. 24x36 is a signature piece that holds a wall on its own. 28x40 is a statement piece that anchors the main wall of a room. Choosing between them means measuring the wall and the furniture below it before looking at the artwork again.

Start with the wall, not the image
Three measurements settle most of the decision.
- Width of the furniture below. A common guideline is that art above a sofa, console, or bed should span roughly two thirds to three quarters of that furniture's width. A 72 inch sofa calls for a grouping 48 to 54 inches wide: one piece centered, with lamps, sconces, or end-table objects completing the width. The piece itself carries the center; the flanking objects carry the proportion.
- Viewing distance. A living room piece is judged from 10 to 15 feet, where proportion registers and detail does not. A hallway piece is seen from 3 to 5 feet, where a smaller size reads fully.
- Center height. Centering the piece at roughly 57 to 60 inches from the floor keeps it at standing eye level. Above furniture, the bottom edge sits 6 to 10 inches above the furniture top so the two read as one unit.
18x24 vs 24x36 vs 28x40: what each size does
18x24 in (45x60 cm): accent
Fills an entry wall, a hallway, the wall above a shelf, or one slot in a gallery arrangement. Reads fully at close range. Does not hold a wall wider than about 40 inches on its own; above a sofa it leaves both sides visually empty.
24x36 in (60x90 cm): signature
Holds a living room, study, or dining wall on its own. Sits above a console, a loveseat, a desk, or a prayer corner without companion pieces. This is the default answer for a wall between 48 and 72 inches wide.
28x40 in (70x100 cm): statement
Anchors the main wall above a mantel, a wide credenza, a bed, or a full sofa. Above a sofa it sits centered, and the sofa's lamps or end tables complete the grouping width. On a wall narrower than 60 inches it crowds the edges; on a wall wider than 96 inches it becomes the fixed point the rest of the wall is arranged around. The Silver Field Mount Ararat piece was composed at this scale; its 24x36 is a reduction of it.
Substitutes and where they lose
- Small framed prints bought to be safe. Chosen because a smaller piece feels lower risk. An 18x24 above a sofa fails the proportion test and reads as a placeholder. The risk moved from the purchase to the wall.
- Gallery walls of many small pieces. Chosen to fill width without committing to one object. Requires six to twelve coordinated pieces, a layout template, and a wall of nail holes, and delivers visual noise where a single focal point was needed.
- Oversized stretched canvas from mass-market sellers. Chosen because large sizes are cheap. Canvas sags over time and shows glare under varnish. The size is right; the object is not.
Why the material changes the size decision
The pieces in question are direct-printed on 3mm brushed silver aluminum DIBOND. That construction changes how each size behaves on a wall.
- Unprinted areas stay metal. Where the design is white or light, no ink is applied and the brushed aluminum shows through. Those areas reflect ambient light, so the piece reads larger and more dimensional than a printed white background of the same measurements.
- Matte, glare-free surface. The horizontal brushed grain scatters light instead of mirroring it. A 28x40 can hang opposite a window without becoming a reflection of the room, which is the usual reason large glossy pieces get downsized.
- Frameless and rigid. The 3mm panel needs no frame, so the stated size is the size on the wall. A framed print adds 2 to 4 inches of width that must be included in the proportion calculation.
- Hanging kit included. Hardware varies by fulfillment country.

When This Option Applies / When It Does Not
28x40 applies when: the wall is 60 inches or wider, the piece will be the only object on it, and it is seen from across a room. Required for a full sofa, a mantel, a queen or king bed, or a wide credenza.
24x36 applies when: the wall is 48 to 72 inches wide, or the piece shares the wall with a lamp, sconce, or shelf. This covers most dining walls, studies, and prayer corners.
18x24 applies when: the wall is under 40 inches, the viewing distance is under 5 feet, or the piece is one element in a planned arrangement.
None of these apply when: the wall has not been measured, the furniture below it has not been decided, or the piece is for a rental where wall anchors are not permitted. Measure first.
The Pomegranate Tree of Life Cross is offered in all three sizes. Silver Field, Mount Ararat on brushed aluminum, is offered in 24x36 and 28x40 only, because the composition was built for the larger scale. Pieces for the wall and table are in the home collection.
Next step
Measure the wall width and the furniture width. Match the result to the conditions above. Then select that size for the Pomegranate Tree of Life Cross. Every piece is made to order: production begins within 2 to 5 business days, US delivery typically takes 3 to 7 business days after production, and US shipping is free. Confirm the measurement before ordering, because a made-to-order size cannot be swapped once production starts.
Frequently asked questions
What size wall art should go above a couch?
The grouping above a couch should span about two thirds to three quarters of the couch width. For a 72 to 84 inch sofa, that means a 28x40 in piece centered with lamps or end-table objects completing the width, or a 24x36 in piece with larger flanking elements. Hang it so the bottom edge sits 6 to 10 inches above the sofa back.
Is 24x36 big enough for a living room wall?
Yes for a wall between 48 and 72 inches wide, or for any wall where the piece shares space with a lamp, sconce, or console styling. On a wall wider than 72 inches with nothing else on it, 24x36 reads undersized and 28x40 is the correct choice.
How high should metal wall art be hung?
Center the piece at about 57 to 60 inches from the floor, which is standing eye level in most rooms. Above furniture, keep the bottom edge 6 to 10 inches above the furniture top. The included hanging kit is matched to the 3mm aluminum panel; hardware varies by fulfillment country.
Does brushed aluminum wall art look bigger than the stated size?
It tends to. Unprinted areas leave the brushed metal exposed and reflecting ambient light, so the piece holds more visual weight than a paper print with a white background. The stated size is the physical size; the panel is frameless, so nothing is added to it.
